Hereditary – USA, 2018

‘Every family tree hides a secret.’

Hereditary is a 2018 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Ari Aster; it stars Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd and Milly Shapiro.

When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited…

A24 (The Killing of a Sacred Deer; The Monster; The Witch) is releasing Hereditary theatrically later this year. Meanwhile, the film will have its world premiere at the Sundance Festival on January 28th.

Reviews:

“Viewers will get a thoughtful story of grief told through great performances, but what they’ll come for is the scares, and Hereditary shines in this department. Writer-director Ari Aster uses shadow and misdirection to great effect, providing many moments to rile audiences, while also offering moments of shocking, blunt violence as well.” Evan Saathoff, Birth. Movies. Death.

” …perhaps since Aster was inspired by his own family, he puts a lot of work into building the connections between the characters. He’s invested not just in their survival, but their emotional health, and their connections with each other. Which makes it all the more tragic as Hereditary threatens these things in turn, cruelly and effectively. It’s a merciless film, crafted for maximum effect.” Tasha Robinson, The Verge

“Amazingly confident for a debut feature, Hereditary is first-class genre filmmaking. It’s hard for me to imagine seeing a more frightening movie this year—especially after the full-bore climax, which features images that will stay lodged uncomfortably in my mind (and possibly my bad dreams) for who knows how long.” A.A. Dowd, The A.V. Club

“Creepy drawings, fiery seances and decapitated floating corpses are just a few of the relentless scares that will haunt your nightmares after watching Hereditary, which grounds its thrills in harrowing family drama, and manages to make well-trodden genre tropes feel fresh with twisted humor and minimal special effects.” Patrick Ryan, USA Today

“Before it becomes an ultra-creepy haunted house movie, Hereditary is an almost-unbearable study of the grieving process […] Then something far more terrifying happens. Despite some occasional clichéd jump scares, Hereditary excels at permeating a convincing environment of despair with first-rate horror.” Eric Kohn, IndieWire

” …takes hold and never truly lets up as more truths are revealed and the outcome grows more terrifyingly inevitable. Hereditary is a fantastic horror film that pairs its scares with real emotion, and that combination sees each aspect enhance the other. You’ll remember this one long after the credits end.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects

…Hereditary seeks to confound by swinging between moments of controlled Kubrick-ian terror and unhinged emotional hysteria. There were walkouts. There were people complaining when they marched through the snow to the bus. Even Aster appeared uncomfortable answering questions about the film, which so clearly comes from a place of real pain.” Dan Jackson, Thrillist

” …Hereditary isn’t entirely bleak and grim. There’s a ribbon of dark humor running throughout, particularly in its wild climax, punctuated by a wicked final song choice […] I left the theater feeling a little rattled, a little spent, and entirely relieved that I’d made it through.” Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

” …even as Aster soars into Grand Guignol territory, Hereditary keeps a tight hold on its story sense. What makes the movie so satisfying is that while it turns steadily into a batshit-crazy collision of the supernatural and the classically mythological, the family dynamic remains firmly in play.” David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

‘Witness its awakening’

The Evil is a 1977 [released 1978] American supernatural horror feature film directed by Gus Trikonis (The Darker Side of Terror) from a screenplay co-written with Donald G. Thompson [as Galen Thompson].

The Ed Carlin produced movie stars Richard Crenna, Joanna Pettet, Andrew Prine and features a bizarre cameo appearance by Victor Buono as the Devil; although his scenes were apparently re-edited for some releases.

The Evil will be released on Blu-ray by Scream Factory on September 18, 2018 in a new, high-definition transfer from apparently the only surviving archival print. Extras from the previous DVD release will be included.

Psychiatrist C.J. Arnold (Richard Crenna) purchases an abandoned mansion, which was built over hot sulphur pits, in order to set up a drug rehab facility. He recruits a group of volunteers to help clean-up and renovate the large house.

Almost immediately, C.J.’s wife, Dr. Caroline Arnold (Joanna Pettet) begins sensing a strange and usual presence that starts to manifest as a ghostly apparition. Soon thereafter, more strange and eerie things start to happen which start to agitate the volunteers, along with the resident dog.

Richard Crenna

Later on, C.J. discovers a trap door in the basement, which he opens up and unknowingly unleashes a menacing spirit. Suddenly, all of the doors and windows become locked, trapping everyone inside the creepy mansion.

The unwilling occupants soon discover that the trap door in the basement is actually a gateway into Hell itself. Slowly, the evil force within the house starts to kill off the trapped occupants one by one through a series of bizarre deaths…

Reviews:

“It’s light on the jump scares and gore, but it brings the creepy atmosphere big time. Of course, like most of the haunted house films it takes from, it also has an ending you wish wasn’t there.” Tony Ryan, CHUD.com

“The direction and the score are competent but much feels formulaic, even heavy-handed as loud music telegraphs the tension […] The very last minutes would better suit a TV special than a feature-length horror film but the appearance of Satan alone – always very rare – makes The Evil worth seeking out.” David Elroy Goldweber, Claws & Saucers, Lulu.com, 2012

Buy: Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

“A rather traditional haunted house thriller with a slim plot line that milks the sub-genre for all its worth, The Evil is actually an entertaining, well-paced film, even if it’s not all that scary or logical for that matter. Shot almost entirely on location in a single mansion, the creaky secluded setting, along with tight direction and a fine cast make this one worthwhile…” George R. Reis, DVD Drive-In

“Despite its relative obscurity, The Evil is at least the equal of many of its peers, both in terms of structure and presentation. This isn’t some cheap knock-off, this is a genuine, 100%, good old fashioned horror movie; just like the one’s you’d stay up late to watch on TV as a kid.” Paul Pritchard, DVD Verdict

Andrew Prine

” …here character development only exists in little snippets that have so little bearing on the ultimate story that they feel like they’re there only to pad out the running time. And when the horrors start, they’re trotted out so mechanically that it almost becomes laughably predictable. As a result, the movie never really comes to life; it feels more like an exercise in formula…” Dave Sindelar, Fantastic Movie Musings and Ramblings

“It’s all pretty expertly done, and director Gus Trikonis knows how to make a haunted-house movie. Victor Buono is sublime as the Devil himself…” James J. Mulay (editor), The Horror Film, CineBooks, 1989

“Though it appears to be in the ExorcistOmen school, this one is really more like The Shining […] With a solid cast of character actors, the result is better than you might expect and the film does have some moments that are frightening and surprising.” Mike Mayo, The Horror Show Guide, Visible Ink, 2013

The Evil was filmed in a real castle in Montezuma, New Mexico and, per usual, the utilizing of an actual space with authentic history pays off. Frankly the location alone is more than enough to recommend this movie. The Evil  is more frivolous fun than under the skin unsettling, but it’s not completely brain dead either. Unlike many a haunted house flick it comes off as generally interested in the supernatural.” Kindertrauma

the evil2

” …The Evil really belongs to corpulent character actor Victor Buono […] who turned his brief cameo as the Devil into the most amusing slice of monstrous villainy since Vic Diaz in Beast of the Yellow Night.” Christopher T Koetting, Mindwarp! The Fantastic True Story of Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, Hemlock Books, 2009

Buy Mindwarp! Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk

“Richard Crenna is set up, just like the rationalist heroes of Curse of the Demon (1957) and Night of the Eagle (1961), as sceptics who throughout the course of the film have the arc where they are forced to face the actuality of matters supernatural – although this is far too crude a film to make anything interesting out of such.” Richard Scheib, Moria

“Trikonis’s direction is skillful enough, as he knows how to capture the ominous surroundings and chilling events through unsettling camera angles and by often bathing the film in dark shadows. If you’re going to have an effective haunted house movie, the house itself has to be adequately spooky, and this one is. Really, “adequate” is the best way to describe this one…” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!

Joanna Pettet

“Taking a cue from The Exorcist into the bargain, this actually trapped its characters inside the house in question once the blundering C.J. managed to unleash the demons of Hell, or as much of that as the budget would allow, which evidently stretched to a wind machine judging by how many of the more intense sequences were shot in what appeared to be a Force 9 gale.” Graeme Clarke, The Spinning Image

“Though the direction and the cinematography were fairly solid, much of the acting left a little to be desired with Crenna and the female lead played by Joanna Pettet, and Crenna’s wife in the film, better than the rest. The movie produced more thrills than it did horror, as the pace during the latter two-thirds moved the film along quickly.” The Telltale Mind

Cassie Yates

“A strong opening and some atmospheric elements put this one on the right track […] Crenna tries, but can’t seem to overcome the inherent weaknesses of the script. Solid production values and a haphazard earnestness runs throughout, however, and make it generally a watchable one-time journey if nothing else.” The Terror Trap

” …despite working with a low budget, director Gus Trikonis manages to whip up a good number of chills. He is helped greatly by managing to shoot in an actual old and creepy-looking mansion, and its dilapidated exteriors and interiors add a great deal of atmosphere. Trikonis adds to the eerie feeling with skilful use of sound – a rainstorm, creepy music – while also knowing when to shut up and use a background of silence equally effectively.” The Unknown Movies

“While the set-up is nothing but standard and some of the mayhem gets a bit over-the-top at times this is a fairly entertaining time with some okay shocks (such as the one involving a dumbwaiter) and acceptable spookings despite a finale that’s too silly…” The Video Graveyard

Victor Buono as The Devil

“Surrealism doesn’t fuse well with exploitation and Victor Buono has a lame role as evil incarnate.” Los Angeles Times

“Crenna and Pettet confront the devil himself, played with sinister angelicism by Victor Buono. A silly idea? Maybe, but Trikonis and Buono make it click.” Variety, 1978

“An extremely fast-paced, tightly constructed film in the tradition of, but far superior to, The Legend of Hell House (1973), the film milks the haunted house sub-genre for all it’s worth.” Phil Hardy (editor), The Aurum Film Encyclopedia: Horror

In the USA, PG-13 rated The Keeping Hours is released in 2018 on digital VOD (July 24) and DVD )August 7) by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Reviews:

“Ana Ortiz’s medium/dog walker sticks out a bit as she suggests a possible earlier direction for the film. Yet, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in the emotional story. Moncrieff and Sonnenshine have a strong hold on the tone they want to achieve with the film, and it radiates on the screen. Adding in a pitch perfect Pace and Coon, and you have a can’t miss film.” Christopher James, Awards Circuit

“The baseline concept is what makes the proceedings intermittently compelling. It’s hard to be entirely unmoved by Mark and Elizabeth’s situation […] But mostly there are missed opportunities. When it misses its mark, which is more often than not…” Sam Fragoso, The Wrap

‘Whatever you do…’

Don’t Look in the Cellar is a 2008 American slasher horror feature film directed by Dennis Devine (Things 4; Vampire Club 3D; Alice in MurderlandLizzie Borden’s Revenge; et al) from a screenplay co-written by Carlos Perez (Monster: The Prehistoric ProjectVamps in the City; The Occultist). The movie stars Randal Malone, Shevaun Kastl and Tara Shayne.

A group of college students regret their decision to sneak into the cellar of a haunted asylum on Halloween. One by one, they encounter Smiley, the last of a flawed bloodline…

Reviews:

Of course, someone will come along and say “It’s supposed to be cheesy!” Sure. The director took the time to hire actors (let’s call them that for argument’s sake), rent equipment (it actually doesn’t look that bad, as these things go; the trailer is not how the movie itself looks), presumably cater the cast and crew, edit it, get it distributed, etc., and intentionally shot a movie in what is probably his own house…” Brian W. Collins, Horror Movie a Day

“The “asylum” is obviously someone’s house, the effects amount to nothing more than a little blood spatter when someone gets stabbed (and if you can explain to me how someone getting stabbed in the gut results in spatter all over their own face, I’d love to hear it), and the acting? No, that wasn’t acting. That wasn’t even close to acting.” C. Dennis Moore, Movie Rewind

The Amityville Horror – USA, 1979

‘For God’s sake, get out!’

The Amityville Horror is a 1979 American supernatural horror feature film directed by Stuart Rosenberg from a screenplay by Sandor Stern, based on Jay Anson’s 1977 book of the same name. The movie stars James Brolin, Margot Kidder, Rod Steiger, Don Stroud and Murray Hamilton.

The film’s soundtrack score was provided by Lalo Schifrin (Tales of Halloween; AbominableThe Manitou; Eye of the Cat; et al)

The Amityville Horror was remade in 2005.

George and Kathy Lutz move into their dream home, snapped up at a bargain price on the basis of it being the scene of a multiple murder some time previously. Soon, strange things are happening – the walls are bleeding, there’s an infestation of flies that attack a priest, money goes missing and George begins acting very strangely. It turns out that this is less a haunted house and more a gateway to Hell, with a demonic presence that possesses people and makes them want to kill…

THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979) JAMES BROLIN, MARGOT KIDDER AMH 001

Review:

When it was originally released in 1979, The Amityville Horror was widely dismissed by critics and horror fans as low-rent tat based on a risible ‘true story’. Nevertheless, it made a fortune and spawned numerous sequels, prequels, remakes and imitators. Not having seen the film since the early 1980s, my memory of it was that the critics were right – this was a plodding affair that felt like an overblown TV movie, and not the sort of thing to be the final film bearing the American International Pictures name. Yet time has been kind to The Amityville Horror. Obviously, it’s not an undiscovered masterpiece, but it’s certainly a decent paranormal phenomenon film, and one who’s influence can clearly be seen even now.

While the story that this (and Jay Anson’s original novel) is based on is almost certainly nonsense, the film does a good job of playing things very straight, and Stuart Rosenberg’s direction brings a certain tension to what could easily be ridiculous material. It certainly borrows from earlier movies like The Omen, with its set-piece horrors, but it also sets up several genre tropes that filmmakers like Lucio Fulci would play on over the next few years, and which remain horror staples – the idea of a house being home to an ancient evil rather than mere ghosts was fairly new at the time. I’d still bristle at the notion that the original The Amityville Horror is any sort of classic. However, it’s a great deal better than it probably should be.

Other reviews:

“Ultimately this first entry manages to be effective but just not that good. Which I know sounds weird, but the film succeeds in creating scares and getting in your head, but when it’s all said and done nothing ever really happens. It just sort of toys with you the entire time, which makes it a fun watch late night with the lights turned out, but nothing more.” Chris Coffel, Bloody Disgusting

“When the film isn’t tormenting Steiger, it’s concentrating on George going crazy. Unfortunately, as played by James Brolin, George seems to be in a permanently cranky mood even before he and Kathy move into their new home. Once the Lutz’s movie into the house you find yourself wondering if George is possessed or if he’s just a jerk? Sometimes, it’s hard to tell.” Lisa Marie Bowman, Horror Critic

“Though undeniably spooky in spots, mainly due to the atmospheric direction of Stuart Rosenberg, The Amityville Horror simply can’t escape  the overall silliness of its plot. Luckily, the earnest efforts of its solid cast keep the potential for unintentional humour at a minimum, with exception of Steiger’s usual over-the-top histrionics.” James J. Mulay (editor), The Horror Film, Cinebooks, 1989

“Director Rosenberg and an excellent cast (apart from Steiger’s over-acting) create an atmosphere of claustrophobic horror and, while the movie does not attempt to offer explanations, the result is a first rate haunted house chiller.” Alan Frank, The Horror Film Handbook, Batsford, 1982

“If one follows King’s lead, it’s easy to contextualize The Amityville Horror as a financial nightmare… Similarly, the movie’s dialogue constantly references financial matters. “Bills have to be paid,” says one character. “The IRS is calling,” warns another. ‘They’ll nickel and dime you to death” is a mantra not just about the bill collectors, perhaps, but a warning about the demons in the house.” John Kenneth Muir, Horror Films FAQ: All That’s Left to Know About Slashers, Vampires, Zombies, Aliens, and More, Applause Theatre & Cinema Books, 2013

“Director Stuart Rosenberg crafted an effective horror movie that succeeds largely because the performers take the over-the-top material seriously… The film is taut, tense, and filled with the bizarre, unsettling events chronicled in the book.” James F. Broderick, Now a Terrifying Motion Picture!: Twenty-Five Classic Works of Horror Adapted from Book to Film, McFarland, 2012

” …this is a one-stop shop for all things supernatural horror, if you’re into that kind of thing. However, apart from a few stellar moments, this one doesn’t deserve its longstanding appeal…” Really Awful Movies

“In order to be a horror movie, a horror movie needs a real Horror. The creature in Alien was truly gruesome. The case of possession in The Exorcist was profoundly frightening. The problem with The Amityville Horror is that, in a very real sense, there’s nothing there. We watch two hours of people being frightened and dismayed.” Roger Ebert, January 1, 1979

“Tautly directed, but the thin material, and a dreadfully hammy priest by Steiger, effectively wreck what little suspense remains.” Geoff Andrew, Time Out (London)

“The film works best when it implies rather than shows. Of course we have to take in to account that the film is now nearly forty years old but dated special effects aside, it feels that it loses some of its strength as soon as it starts to try and depict red eyed demons and gateways to hell.” Sinead Beverland, UK Horror Scene

“The plot is standard haunted house stuff with a weak ending and Rod Steiger on hand to chew the scenery as a priest. On the plus side, the house has a feeling of reality to it.” Mike Mayo, Videohound’s Horror Show,Visible Ink Press, 1998

Paranormal Farm – UK, 2017

Paranormal Farm is a 2017 British found footage horror feature film written, directed by and starring Carl Medland (The Spiritualist). The movie also stars Lucy French and Darren Earl Williams.

A sequel, Paranormal Farm 2: Closer to the Truth, was released in 2018.

A middle-aged couple living on a remote farm put out an advert for a paranormal investigator after their daughter went missing in the woods. Since their daughter’s disappearance, nothing has been the same around the farm. We see what Carl Medland captures on camera…

Reviews:

” … due to the earnest intent of the filmmakers and a basically sound story, the few moments where it does lag a bit quite often lead to bits of humour and irony, which also work well within the context of the film.” Jane Foster, Britflicks

Paranormal Farm is everything a great found footage film should be; an experience of simulated reality to lose yourself in, only to be scared shitless by fantastic classic scares. It’s a whispered ghost story put to film and I thoroughly enjoyed it!” Horror Fuel

“It is testament to Medland just how impressive an experience this was considering the very indie stylings of it. The performances of the three main actors are very very good indeed and that adds so much to the film, it elevates it from the dense layer of awful found footage horrors out there.” Daniel Simmonds, The Rotting Zombie

Trivia:

The film was shot in just two days on an iPhone fo £200.00.

‘Haunted houses for sale’

Buyer Beware – original title: Ji wu – is a 2018 Hong Kong-Malaysian supernatural horror feature film written and directed by Malaysian-born Jeffrey Chiang (Dilarang masuk). The movie stars Carlos Chan Ka-lok, Cheung Kwok-keung, Mimi Kung Chi-yan and Carlos Chan Ka-lok.

Young and financially struggling Charlie (Carlos Chan Ka-lok), is forlorn after his break-up with his materialistic girlfriend Shermaine (Carmen Tong Ka-man ) and is also burdened with paying hefty hospital bills for his father, who is in a coma.

Charlie joins a rising property agency headed by wealthy middle-aged couple Gordon (Cheung Kwok-keung) and Lucy (Mimi Kung Chi-yan), however they specialise in buying up dirt cheap properties after someone has died or been murdered in them. He soon finds himself burying his conscience in front of oblivious clients as he sells them blatantly haunted properties…

Reviews:

“There are enough unnerving moments to make your skin crawl, especially as it plays on your fears of empty abandoned houses with brutal or tragic histories, but not quite sufficient for this to be anything more than an adequate Hong Kong horror offering, not least because of its exasperating u-turn right at the end.” Gabriel Chong, Movie Exclusive

” …a slow-burner which builds its unsettling vibe with admirable flair – before succumbing to an onslaught of over-the-top genre clichés in the last reel […] Buyer Beware is at its scariest when it offers us sightings in mundane locations, which are later revealed to be consequences of horrible deaths by murder or accidents.” Edmund Lee, South China Morning Post

Release:

Buyer Beware was released in China by mm2 Entertainment on 28 June 2018
